Disintegration is the process whereby solid dosage forms break apart in an aqueous environment allowing the active pharmaceutical ingredient to be released. As tableting became more advanced and direct compression was introduced as a process, a new disintegrant class emerged known as the superdisintegrant. Superdisintegrants improve disintegrant efficiency resulting in decreased use levels when compared to traditional disintegrants.
